Frequently asked questions

What are Hairware's wigs made from?

All of our wigs are made of 100% modacrylic fibres.

Why don't you use human hair?

A human hair wig is much heavier than one made with modacrylic fibres requiring frequent attention to styling and often need to be chemically cleaned. A human hair wig or hairpiece will straighten if you go out in the rain and is much more expensive than a synthetic one, it can also oxidise (fade) when exposed to the elements.

Why do Hairware/Revlon colours look so natural?

Each wig/hairpiece is blended with up to eleven subtle shades, creating a really natural appearance.

Can I cut my wig or hairpiece?

We don't recommend that you cut your wig. Each wig or hairpiece is designed and curled for their specific hair length, and you should keep in mind that you could be cutting off critical curl that will not grow back. You can however trim the fringe but with great care.

How long will my wig/hairpiece last?

You must remember that a hairpiece/wig is an accessory. If you intend to wear your wig/hairpiece daily we recommend you purchase more than one piece and alternate. Just like a hat or pair of shoes, your wig/hairpiece will not last forever.

How often should I wash my wig/hairpiece?

This depends how often it is worn. If worn only occasionally, once every few weeks is sufficient, if you wear it daily or on a regular basis then every couple of weeks is fine.

How do I clean my wig/hairpiece?

Place the wig/hairpiece into its original hair net then, using luke warm water and a few drops of wig shampoo, gently wash. Rinse in cool water. Allow to dry (this is easier on our collapsible wig tree). DO NOT comb or brush while the fibre is still wet. When it is completely dry a gentle shake will return the wig/hairpiece to its original style.

If the wig/hairpiece is clean but looks a little dull what can I do?

Use our synthetic wig conditioner. It will add lustre to the fibre and bring life back to your wig. You can spray for acheiving a "wet look" when styling.

Can I dye my wig or hairpiece?

No, ammonia and peroxide found in the hair dye will ruin the synthetic fibres. The fibre cannot absorb the colour like human hair.

Can I use any hair spray?

Use a wig spray or any other spray that is water based (ie 40% aqua). Excess spray can cause a build up and may cause the fibre to look dull. This will wash out when you shampoo.

Can I take my wig/hairpiece on holiday where the climate is hot?

Sometimes you may find heat will cause static electricity. Lightly spraying your wig with clear water will help eliminate this problem and also freshen the fibres.

Can I sleep in my wig/hairpiece?

We do not recommend sleeping in your wig/hairpiece. The friction that builds up from rubbing against the pillowcase can cause tangles and matting. We sell terry towelling and velour turbans, which are ideal for sleeping in.

Can I use heated rollers or a heat brush?

NO. The heat from heated rollers, heat brushes or hot tongs will ruin the synthetic fibre. Any direct or indirect heat, such as a radiator, oven, BBQ, tumble dryer etc. is bad for synthetic fibre.

What does monofilament mean?

Monofilament is where one strand of fibre is knotted singly on a very fine single layer of mesh, which allows the natural skin tone to appear through it. It is both water and air permeable for complete comfort.
